Stem Cell Ethics Debate
Stem cell treat mentsare entering Phase II clinical trials, taking them one step closer to the clinic and routine use. But have we really resolved our ethical concerns about using stem cells?
Stem cell research raises many ethical issues –sourcing from embryos and foetuses, consent for adult sources and the potential safety issues of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). These all have far reaching implications for society and industry; but to allow for technological advances whilst protecting people rights one must ask the question, “how much do you regulate the industry?” This event will give you the chance to meet professionals working with stem cells and put your question about the future of this exciting industry to them. Our speakers have a blend of experiences covering stem cell research, taking treatments through clinical trial and the legal concerns of their use. Further information and booking can be found here:

Careers in international development, Beyond the PhD
When: 12th April 2013, 5-6pm
Where:Sir Charles Wilson Building
Prof Dennis Rodgers (School of Social and Political Sciences) will be joined by Katherine Trebeck (Policy and Advocacy Manager,UK Poverty Programme, Oxfam), Ricardo Fuentes-Nieva (Head of Research, Oxfam) and Lorraine Currie (Head of International Programmes, SCIAF), to discuss career opportunities for research students in international development. This will be an informal panel discussion, considering the skills or experience that research students might develop during their degree and how these do (or don’t!) translate into policy, research and practice roles in international development. There will also be discussion of how, if you do perceive a gap in your skills or experience, you might be able to fill that through voluntary work or getting involved in external groups or networks whilst you are still studying. We know that time is precious during a research degree and no-one can do everything. This event will help you to get a better understanding of the opportunities that are out there and the paths into them, as well as how you can focus your efforts and articulate your skills and qualities in order to make the most of those opportunities.
